En medio de un océano de distancia, de dificultad, de sueños hundidos, hay una Isla. Un lugar de gran magnetismo, pero también fantasmal e inaccesible. Un muro de muros la rodea. Una frontera de espinas construida con las barreras más extendidas de nuestro mundo: fragmentos de los muros de Israel y Palestina, España y Marruecos, Estados Unidos y México, Corea del Norte y Corea del Sur…

La Isla se alza como un arco de arcos, edificada con las puertas más célebres de la Historia: Puerta de Brandeburgo, Berlín; Puerta de Alcalá, Madrid; Arco del Triunfo, París; Puerta del Cincuentenario, Bruselas; Arco del Triunfo de Pionyang, Corea; Arco Azadi, Teherán; Arco de Constantino, Roma… Son puertas que abren ciudades. Pero también son puertas que conmemoran victorias. La memoria de guerras y conflictos cruza permanentemente por sus arcos de piedra. Arcos de tragedia y libertad, como si fuera necesario un umbral para hacer pasar el tiempo.

Hoy son, indudablemente, las soberbias entradas hacia un mundo mejor.  Y todo esfuerzo es pequeño para proteger esas espléndidas puertas a la felicidad. Existe un extenso catálogo de telones de acero y de alambradas afiladas para controlar la masificación de la desesperanza. Los muros de nuestra política más frustrante cercan la Isla con sus dientes postizos. Fronteras físicas que marcan de forma abrupta el límite de la igualdad.

Quizás por eso esta Isla de la Bienvenida parezca en realidad una señal de advertencia. Que todas estas puertas abiertas sólo den paso al vacío, a un paisaje de ensueños inhóspitos, de utopías martirizantes, al final de un rastro de fracasos humanos. Quizá por eso estar a las puertas del mundo, aunque tenga  la apariencia de un comienzo, no sea más que llegar al final del camino.

In the middle of an ocean of distance, of difficulty, of sunken dreams, there is an island. A seemingly close place, but also ghostly and inaccessible. A wall of walls surrounds it. A border of thorns built with the most recognizable barriers in our world: fragments of the walls of Israel and Palestine, Spain and Morocco, the United States and Mexico, North Korea and South Korea ...

The island rises like an arc of arches, built with the most famous doors in the world: Brandenburg Gate, Berlin; Puerta de Alcalá, Madrid; Arc de Triomphe, Paris; Gate of the Cinquantenaire, Brussels; Arco Rua Augusta, Lisbon; Arc de Triomphe de Pyonyang, Korea; Arco Azadi, Tehran; Arc de Triomphe, Moscow; Arch of Constantine, Rome ... They are doors that open cities. But they are also doors that commemorate victories. The history of wars is raised with the stones of its arches.

Today, undoubtedly, are the superb entrances to a better world. And how to protect those splendid doors to happiness, such as limiting access to freedom, even success? There is an extensive catalog of steel curtains and sharp wire to control the mass of despair. The island appears surrounded by fragments of walls of our political reality. Physical borders that mark abruptly the limit of inequality.

Maybe that's why it seems that this Island of Welcome is an abandoned place. That all these open doors seem not to be very frequented, forming part of a landscape of inhospitable dreams, of martyred utopias, at the end of a trail of human failures. Maybe that's why being at the gates of the world is nothing more than reaching the end of the road.
